** DID YOU KNOW...**
Authorities are watching Xenocal issues
This is straight from the Food and Drug Authority in the USA: “FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that it is reviewing new safety information regarding reports of liver-related adverse events in patients taking orlistat. Orlistat is marketed in the United States as a prescription product, Xenical, and as an over-the-counter (OTC) product, Alli. Between 1999 and October 2008, 32 reports of serious liver injury, including 6 cases of liver failure, in patients using orlistat were submitted to FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System. The most commonly reported adverse events described in the 32 reports of serious liver injury were jaundice, weakness, and abdominal pain. FDA is reviewing other data on suspected cases of liver injury submitted by the manufacturers of orlistat, analysis of these data is ongoing and no definite association between liver injury and orlistat has been established at this time. FDA is not advising healthcare professionals to change their prescribing practices with orlistat. Consumers currently taking Xenical should continue to take it as prescribed and those using over-the-counter Alli should continue to use the product as directed.” Read more at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm180025.htm
Folic acid fortification – new concerns
October saw the mandatory fortification of commercial bread flour with folic acid. Extensive research has shown that folic acid supplementation significantly decrease the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies. Research on fortification did not take account of any side-effects, hence very recently some concerns have been raised over bowel cancer and folic acid supplementation in a new British study. So what’s the ‘take home message’? That we are only now beginning to have a healthy respect for nutrient interactions and that supplementation should not be undertaken lightly.
** FACT OR FALICY? **
Celery tops the list for foods with pesticide residue
Fact! Celery, peaches, apricots, dairy products, wheat products, apples, plums, mandarins, raspberries and oranges are in the top ten according to Safe Food. To read more go to www.safefood.org.nz.
Faulty processing of B9 increases the risk of neural tube defects
Fact! It is not a deficiency of B9 that is being corrected by supplementation prior to and during pregnancy, rather it is a genetic predisposition of faulty processing of B9 that is at the centre of NTDs.
You need more calcium during pregnancy
Falicy! In fact calcium is one of the minerals that you don’t need more of while you are pregnant. Calcium uptake by the body is enhanced during pregnancy and funnily enough meets the needs of mother-to-be and baby.

Advanced Diplomas a big hit!
We have had a huge response from our partnership with the Academy of Complimentary Health clearly showing what students want are courses with a real career offered at the end of it. Already a number of our students who have completed the Certificate of Diet and Nutrition are about to move into their diploma course armed with their exemption for Nutrition One.
Give us a tweet; or is that a twitter?
Yes, we are on Twitter. Students can tweet us at cadencehealth, we would love to hear from you and get some great info sharing happening, so get twittering, or is that tweeting?
Sneakys is also on Twitter, parents, kindies and carers can tweet us at SneakysKids. We have regular nutrition tips, or you can tell us what you think of our newest book What Do I Feed My Baby, or just say ‘hi’.
** OUR PRODUCT PICK**
Chia seeds – We have just discovered something new one of the latest ‘superfoods’. Chia seeds used commonly in Mexico and South America are likely to be a great friend of any vegetarian. Why? Because chia seeds are one of the best sources of omega-3 fats in the plant world. Chia seeds can be ground and added to food and meals or even into water or juice or sprouted.
