** DID YOU KNOW... ** Unit pricing at last! As of last month unit pricing became mandatory in supermarkets of more then 1000 sq metres Australia wide. Hooray, one small step for the consumer! Read more at http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2009/12/02/unit-pricing-becomes-mandatory.html Watch out for food with smoke flavour While we haven’t as yet been able to determine what smoke flavourings are permitted in Australia and New Zealand, or what part of the code they fall under, it doesn’t hurt to take note of overseas findings. The European Food Safety Authority stated that smoke flavour used in meat, cheese and fish may be toxic to health.... EFSA said it "cannot rule out concerns" about a flavouring called Primary Product AM 01, which is obtained from beech wood. Romania and Taiwan are looking to introduce a tax on unhealthy food as a way of increasing funding for their health system. The likely taxable products would include fast-food products, some snacks and chips, confectionery and soft drinks. Now of course defining what constitutes a ‘junk food’ may be tricky, but few would refute that soft drinks are high up the list and given the increasing evidence of their relationship to overweight who knows it may be a good move. One concern about such a tactic we had is that this is likely to slug many already struggling families. ** FACT OR FALICY? ** Cooking looses nutrients Fact! About 15% of water-based antioxidants are lost in broccoli when cooked and even more in cooked carrots. However, tomato and potato are the opposite. Peeling produce lowers the nutrition Fact!
