our tips

Make your strawberries last longer

Are you sick of your strawberries sagging before you get a chance to eat them?  Director Leanne Cooper has come up with a handy tip that might just make strawberries last longer in the fridge. First have a nibble of one or two out of the pack, place the lid back on and tip them upside down and place back in the fridge.  She swears that it stops them from going off so quickly, her theory is "they can breath better"...

did you know…

Smokers eat less fruit and veggies

Studies have shown that smokers tend to eat less fruit and vegetables than non-smokers, which in turn may reduce their intake of dietary antioxidants leading to more oxidative stress (aging of cells).  Oxidative stress is continually being connected with various illnesses.

Green tea is good for your heart

Most of us know that tea (black and green which are the same bar the processing) are great sources of antioxidants called polyphenols, but did you know that green tea may also reduce heart disease and stroke (especially in women).  A recent study conducted in Japan did not that 3+ cups per day were required (we're not sure if this is a Japanese tea cup or a western size cup).  http://www.abc.net.au/health/minutes/stories/s1758737.htm

The importance of introducing ‘lumpy’ foods

Researchers at Bristol University in England have found that babies who are not exposed to lumpy foods may be more likely to develop fussy eating habits.  Ensure baby is given a variety of foods between the ages of six to nine months to prevent them from later becoming fussy eaters.  Introduce small bits of cooked (soft) vegetables or mash foods with a fork so that small lumps remain.

Why is breast cancer on the rise?

"It's a sobering fact that this year more than 13,000 Australian women and 100 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That's 36 each day and the numbers are growing alarmingly. It's now the case that by the time a woman reaches the age of 85, she has a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer." KERRY O'BRIEN

Few women haven't questioned the effect of their underarm deodorant or grandma's aluminium pots on their health.  It seems now that excessive weight gain post menopause, long term use of HRT, and lifestyle issues of having children later and breastfeeding less.  So while detection and treatment are greatly improved there is more we can do.   Read this interview at http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2006/s1773694.htm

No, well you are likely to in the future!  ORAC or oxygen radical absorbance capacity is a text conducted on a foods total antioxidant power.  A US agency has recently published a list of the top fruit and vegetables with the highest ORAC ratings.  The study suggests that by eating loads of high-ORAC foods you can raise your antioxidant power in your blood by 10-25%, prevent partial loss of long-term memory (at least in rats), assist the brain in its neural response efficiency and protect blood vessels from oxygen damage.  The top five fruit and veggies on the list are:

Apples hold the key to reducing peanut allergy

The same centre believes it may have found the answer to reducing the allergenicity of peanuts, it seems that by adding a natural compound found in apples called polyphenol oxidase (PPO) to chopped-up peanuts this may reduce the allergic reaction some may experience.
