What's in store for 08?

Publishing What do I Feed my Baby

What do I Feed my Baby has been a huge success, the feedback we have been given has been inspiring!  So with that we are taking our book to the printers and having it published.  We hope to start distributing our gorgeous book mid 2008.  If you are interested in a copy or in becoming a distributor let us know.

Healthy Eating Instructors program for Australian schools

This program is going to be one of our most challenging projects to-date.  We believe that basic healthy eating is the foundation to good health and to support this we want to make it easier to know how to eat healthy.  Our aim is to place a Healthy Eating Instructor (HEI) in every school across Australia.  HEI's will be the fountain of knowledge from anything healthy eating, providing canteen reviews and support, tips and tip sheets on nutrition for parents, students and staff to guidance on how to eat better.  Everyone who has any contact with a school at some point will now have access to someone who has the time and the resources to help them eat better, live longer and be healthier.

We are very proud to announce St Lukes Grammar (Dee Why) and Our Lady of Good Counsel (Frenchs Forest) will be piloting the program.  If you would like to know more about this project, or think your school may be interested you can register your interest online now.

What do I Feed my Toddler

With the success of What do I Feed my Baby we are considering a What do I Feed my Toddler.  Aimed at children 1 to 3 years this little gem will cover weaning, milk, weight, fussy eating, meal ideas and recipes, lunchboxes and much more.  If you would like to be notified of the release of this book email the office.

top tips

Pick the best product

Opt for products that have more potassium than sodium (in the 100g panel), as a rule of thumb this can help to find products that are less processed.  Try it next time you are at the supermarket by comparing processed foods with natural whole foods.

Send us your tip.....>>

product pick

Jalna fruit yoghurt range - I cheered when I found that Jalna fruit yoghurts have no added sugar, which meant even my baby could enjoy this range; they are great for the whole family.  For the calorie conscious you might like to try the Vaalia range, it was given an excellent review for its probiotics in an Australian dietetics journal.

If you would like to share a tip on a product or have us check out a product, send the details via email and if possible we will add it to our next eNewsletter.

did you know…

What increases your cancer risk?

You would think that with cancer as our third biggest cause of death in Australia we would know more than we do about why some people get cancer and others don't.  However we can say with some certainty that modifying our lifestyle can reduce our chances of cancer (by as much as up to a third).

  • Watch your weight: Obesity is a significant cause of many cancers such as oesophagus, colon, rectum, pancreas, breast, endometrium and kidneys, now that is an impressive list!

  • Keep moving it babe'! Activity it seems has an anti-cancer effect, so that 30 minutes a day working up to more is essential for good health and longevity.

  • Booze is bad:  Alcohol increases your risk of a long line of cancers also, not too mention its role in body fat and insulin resistance.  Starting to see a picture emerging here?

Now diet!  Well if you know us at all you will know that we harp on about the importance of fruit and veggies because of the plant compounds, so again no surprise here about their role in cancer prevention. But studies continue to throw a shadow over meat and processed meat consumption.  In fact estimates of excesses are quite surprising "On average, if you eat large amounts of red or processed meat you have about a 30% increased risk of colorectal cancer compared with someone who eats little or none".....>>

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) published their findings in a report called Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer.....>>

Feel yukky after a fatty meal?

Well that's because fatty meals play havoc with your blood sugar, blood fat and your hormones, what's more though these tasty morsels encourage the body to make inflammatory substances that damage vessels in the body.  All these events require the body to react, however the spill-over effect leads to an increase of free-radicles in the bodyOnce again it's interesting to see that the Mediterranean diet and Okinawa diet (of Japan) came up trumps.....>>

What you bath baby in matters

This is a little scary, it seems some baby lotions, powders and shampoos contain chemicals (well let's be specific, nasty chemicals such as phthalates) that may be linked to allergies and other health issues.....>>
