Extra virgin olive oil is tops
Olive oils are graded according to their acidity. The very first cold extraction of olives yields the least acidic oil. It is also rich in flavour, dark in colour and hence is called Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). Of course it follows the next best thing is Virgin Olive Oil. Remember to store your good quality olive oil in a dark, cool place to avoid it going rancid.
Vegie spot light - Beetroot for your liver, to reduce cancer and keep arteries clean
Beetroot has a strong history of being used to support, detoxify and repair the liver. Beetroot is very low GI, a good source of B9 and contains carotenoids and flavonoids which help prevent bad cholesterol from being oxidised and clogging up arteries. On top of this the compounds responsible for the red colouring are said to be anti-cancer. Try a little raw beetroot grated into a salad, or sliced and fried as chips or roasted, or add a little into your fresh juices. You will be amazed at what it does to your body (and don't be horrified by the end product, you will know what we mean when you try it).
Tip your strawberries upside down
If you are like us at Cadence Health you will find that your strawberries seem to last less than a day or two. We find if we place our strawberries upside down in the fridge that they last just a little longer. Maybe it allows those carefully hidden ones at the bottom to breath and prevent them from damaging the other ones?

Certificate of Diet and Nutrition linked to Diploma of Nutrition
We are currently in talks with another college to link our Certificate of Diet and Nutrition to their Advanced Diploma of Nutrition. While we 'iron out' the details we have mapped our course to the Health Training Package element 'Provide Basic Dietary Advice'. So our students can use the course as a pathway to the Diploma and also 'tick off' this section. We can now offer evidence of training for the Provide Basic Dietary Advice competency unit so all students can use the course as evidence of training for other courses. If you are currently undertaking the course and would like to take the upgraded assessment that includes this new option contact the office.
Festive Season period
The office will be on a skeleton staff from December 17th to January 4th, all requests will be actioned, though they may take a little longer while our staff rotate their well earned breaks.

did you know…
It's important to honour a child's self-regulation
We are born with internal cues of hunger and satiety (fullness), it seems that even very young children are good at regulating their 24-hour energy intake even if their meals are a little erratic. However, these cues and this ability can be altered environmental factors such as our child-feeding practices. In other words our attitudes towards our child's eating habits. Being too strict about what a child eats can serve to increase a child's desire for fatty foods, and reduce their acceptance of healthy foods, as well as upset their self-regulation mechanisms. Its important to provide opportunities for self-control, this can influence overweightness as well as fussy eating habits. Remember parents offer healthy food for children to choose from.
Science proving GE crops are redundant
Scientists are finding that going with nature (as opposed to going against it) is yielding real benefits. Uk researchers have found a naturally occurring plant compound is very effective at making plants resistant to pests. This is just one of many such trials.

Gulping down your food doesn't help your waistline
Shoveling your food down quickly and of course eating too much can increase your risk of being overweight up by as much as three times. Researchers continue to highlight the importance of our attitude towards food and eating, as well as listening and being in tune with our body signals.
Paediatric speech palthologists and deglutitionists for fussy foodies
Toddlers and children who have had difficulties with swallowing lumpy foods or have developed very difficult to manage eating habits can benefit greatly from visiting a paediatric speech pathologist or deglutitionist.
