SPOTLIGHT ON A NATURAL REMEDY

strengthen your hair and nails

Tissue salts (very diluted amounts of minerals) are a fantastic way to support areas in your body.  Silica is excellent if you or your children have cracked skin, dull hair or chipping nails (common in kids that are veggie-phobs).  They can be chewed and are readily accepted by most children.

prunus serotina to stop coughing

Looking for a natural cough suppressant for your child so he or she can sleep at night.  Ask your local health food shop for a kids remedy that contains prunus serotina (wild cherry bark).

Choice recently reviewed frozen fish and found that the following had the greatest quantities of omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Birds Eye Ocean Select Atlantic Salmon Provencale (90% fish; Total fat per 100 g = 12.6 g; Saturated fat per 100 g = 2.9 g)

  • BIRDS EYE Ocean Select Atlantic Salmon Lemon Pepper (90% fish;Total fat per 100 g = 14.1 g
    Saturated fat per 100 g = 3.1 g)

Pseudoephedrine no longer banned

The International Olympic Committee has removed the ban on over-the-counter remedies containing pseudoephedrine and place it on the monitoring programme.  A UK study has found that the drug's effect in fact slows the times of runners.

more than just an issue of psychology - anorexia

New research out of the University of NSW has found via brain scans that those who experience anorexia shut down part of their brain when viewing themselves (but not others), which distorts their perception of themselves. "They not only feel they are fat, they actually seem to see that they are fat, so it's a real illusion," Dr Naresh Mondraty, from the University of New South Wales said.  This may now widen the potential factors from psychological to neurological.  For many of us this makes perfect sense, who hasn't caught a reflection of themselves and thought you could do with losing a few pounds.  No matter what others tell you your own perception holds fast.  Now this new finding sheds light on the strength of our neural connections over our behaviour.  Read Tim Olds interview at http://www.abc.net.au/cgi-bin/common/printfriendly.pl?http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2006/s1739016.htm

Omega-3 fatty acids and bipolar disorder

Those omega-3 fatty acids just keep finding favour.  Early studies show some promising benefits of omega-3's in preventing and even treating depression including bipolar disorder.  A diet rich in omega-3's may help to lower your risk of depression.  Bipolar disorder, which has a strong genetic component, is characterised by extreme highs and lows in mood.  While the results are still a little tentative and more research is needed, omega-3's continue to show strong benefits for neurological health.  http://www.abc.net.au/health/minutes/stories/s1749366.htm

refine your hydration techniques

Many athletes use their pre-event body weight as a reference for fluid loss after an event.  It is important to refine this further and use a baseline measurement at the beginning of the day and then compare it to your body weight after a session in order to assess fluid loss.

FOR THE TECHOS

health benefits of herbs and spices: the past, the present, the future

This review is a must read for all health care professionals on the extraordinary health benefits from herbs including rosemary, turmeric, garlic, parsley, nutmeg, lemon grass, passionflower and more. http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/185_04_210806/supplement_210806.html

vitamin d deficiency in children

Some research recently has suggested that vitamin D deficiency in children may be on the increase, this may be particularly prevalent in dark skinned children and those who are covered (either for religious reasons or sun-protection).  Eighty percent of our vitamin D in Australia and New Zealand is gained via skin exposure.  On the down side sun exposure causes over 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia (Munns et al. 2006).  The acceptable amount of sun exposure to gain adequate vitamin D in childhood is not yet known.  Agencies in Australia recommend small amounts of sun exposure before 10am and after 4pm may provide ‘healthy’ amounts of vitamin D.  Children with increased skin pigmentation may require up to six times more sun exposure to gain adequate levels (Munns et al., 2006).  This has been a strong argument for the fortification of milk and other foods with vitamin D.

scurvy not an illness of the past

Recent studies have highlighted one of the many issues with restricting food choices.  It seems scurvy can occur in people who seem to be well-nourished due to such dietary practices.

xenical may not be the answer for everyone

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is upset that Xenical (a weight loss drug) is being advertised during programs that are highly viewed by young women such as Australian Idol.  Of course this is the aim of marketing, to target who you believe is your major audience.  However the AMA says "the commercial is misleading and will encourage young women who are concerned about their weight, but not obese, to take the drug".  It should be kept in mind that while Xenical prevents the body form absorbing fat that this is not necessarily a healthy or long-term answer to weight issues.  Its what you put in your mouth and why that matters.  http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2006/s1754841.htm
