What does a training week structure look in elite teams?
A training week
I was recently asked by one of my interns ‘what does a training week structure look like for you at the NRL?”
To start, the week is structured around the game day, of course. In doing this we must consider what the systems are that need to be full to execute the game plan. We must also take into account the total physical effort expended in the last game. I can’t speak more highly of the importance of a team that works collaboratively, and who are all focused on the same end goal, 2 points, and beyond that the grand final. My team in the performance unit place emphasis on recovery so the tactical and physical sessions can have optimal effect.
Our team consists of an S&C coach, an athletic performance coach, a number of physios, a sports scientist, a dietitian and trainers. We are a team of micro-teams.
Working those energy systems
We collaboratively ensure that the energy systems needed for the ensuing game are recovered, then depleted, but within relevant time frames to remain within the adaptation phase. It’s a detailed process involving calculated depletion ratios around their respective reload time frames.
In terms of the skills, they are considered with an emphasis on 'least chance of injury', along with individual body capabilities, keeping in mind that this is our highest opportunity to train at game pace. Skills execution at game pace for short periods is crucial to retaining game-day intensity for the game almost upon us and right throughout the season.
